P0401 Check Engine Code

What's going on

P0401 means the EGR system is not flowing enough exhaust gas back into the intake when commanded — usually carbon clogging in the valve or passages, a failed EGR valve, or a sensor reporting low flow. You may notice ping on acceleration or a rough idle when the valve sticks open, but many drivers only see the light.

Symptoms

• Check engine light with P0401
• Light ping or knock on acceleration under load
• Rough idle if EGR hangs open
• Failed emissions test — NOx related
• High mileage or short-trip driving history (carbon buildup)

• Carbon-clogged EGR valve or intake passages
• Failed EGR valve motor or position sensor
• Restricted EGR tube or cooler (if equipped)
• DPFE or pressure sensor fault reporting low flow incorrectly

Often sounds like

• P0402 excessive EGR flow — opposite fault
• Vacuum leak — may affect idle without P0401
