What's going on
P0101 means the mass airflow (MAF) sensor reading does not match what the engine computer expects for the current operating conditions. A contaminated MAF hot wire, air leak after the sensor, or a failing sensor can set P0101 — often with lean codes P0171/P0174 and rough idle. Oil from oiled reusable filters is a frequent cause on vehicles serviced at home or quick-lube shops.

- Poor acceleration or hunting RPM at steady throttle
- Code after air filter or intake boot service

Can I keep driving with a P0101 code?

Stalling in traffic or severe hesitation — schedule diagnosis immediately.
Do not clean the MAF with aggressive chemicals at home — wrong cleaners damage the element.

- Not always. We check intake leaks and contamination first. We quote a new sensor only when it fails plausibility checks after cleaning and leak verification.
- Can a dirty air filter cause P0101?
- Usually it is a contaminated MAF element, a cracked intake boot, or a failing sensor — not the filter alone. We inspect the whole intake path before replacing the MAF.
