Transmission Slipping
The problem
Slipping feels like the engine revs but the vehicle doesn't accelerate proportionally — or harsh shifts, delayed engagement, or flare between gears. Automatic and manual transmissions fail differently, but continuing to drive hard while slipping causes internal damage fast.
Symptoms
- RPM flare between gears or delayed shift
- Harsh bang into gear from Park or Drive
- Burnt smell or dark transmission fluid
- Whining or clunking in certain gears
- Check engine light with transmission-related codes
Can I keep driving if the transmission is slipping?
Gentle driving to a shop may be OK for a mild flare — avoid towing, mountain passes, and full throttle.
If it slips in every gear, won't move, or overheats, stop driving — continued slip destroys clutches and bands.
Do not "flush" a failing transmission without diagnosis — wrong fluid or pressure can make it worse.
Common causes
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Worn clutch packs or bands (automatic)
- Clutch wear or hydraulic fault (manual)
- Faulty solenoid or valve body issue
- Internal wear requiring overhaul (after proper inspection)
