Car Won't Start
The problem
No-start splits into two worlds: the engine doesn't crank at all, or it cranks but won't fire. Each path points to different systems — battery, starter, fuel, ignition, immobilizer — and swapping parts without testing wastes time and money.
Symptoms
- Single click or rapid clicking when turning the key
- Complete silence — no crank
- Cranks normally but never starts
- Started fine yesterday, dead this morning
- Intermittent — sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't
Can I keep trying to start it?
If it doesn't crank, repeated attempts usually won't help and can overheat the starter — one or two tries, then stop.
If it cranks but won't start, a few attempts are OK, but don't flood a fuel-injected engine by holding the key.
If you smell fuel strongly or see smoke, don't keep cranking — call for guidance.
Common causes
- Weak or dead battery (most common, especially after cold nights)
- Failed starter or poor connection at terminals
- Alternator not charging on the drive before failure
- Fuel pump, crank sensor, or security/immobilizer issue
- Out of fuel or severely fouled plugs (cranks, no start)
What happens next at LugsNPlugs Automotive?
- 1. Tell us: click vs. silence vs. cranks-no-start, and what happened right before.
- 2. We test battery state of charge, starter draw, and fuel/ignition paths — in that order.
- 3. Mobile or tow-in options can be discussed once we know which system failed.
